\/>\nand you&#8217;ve read the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions which came with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(If you haven&#8217;t yet purchased one, this course will acquaint you with the information on 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You will need a supply of fuel, water, and &#8220;steam oil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most models burn butane gas as fuel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Water&#8221; seems self-explanatory, except that to avoid damaging your locomotive, it wants to be <strong>distilled<\/strong> water, free of impurities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Steam oil&#8221; is a special heavy-density formulation which holds up well under high heat and serves to lubricate inside the engine as it runs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water is the most important step.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your manufacturer likely suggested 3 steps of preparation:\u00a0 gas, oil, water.<\/p>\n<p>A more preferable sequence to remember is &#8220;water, oil, gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We suggest this so that you are always aware of the water level in your locomotive&#8217;s boiler.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NEVER NEVER ALLOW THE BOILER TO RUN OUT OF WATER!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Adding water<\/h3>\n<p>At right is a typical water inlet arrangement.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghls.org\/ghlsv1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20210219_110243_HDR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1590 alignright\" 1903w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remove the threaded plug, and fill the boiler with distilled water to approximately 2\/3 of its capacity (typically 200 to 250 cc).<\/p>\n<p>Do not fill all the way to the top, leave some room for expansion and steam.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Adding steam oil<\/h3>\n<p>The next step is to top up the steam oil reserve.\u00a0 On some locomotives, this port has a small &#8220;tee&#8221; handle on top to facilitate opening.\u00a0 On others, you&#8217;ll need a screwdriver to open the tank.<\/p>\n<p><a pressing down to flow gas into the locomotive until the reservoir is full, when gas begins to escape from the filler valve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a valve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Burner will light with a &#8220;pop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 if flames flash out of the front of the locomotive, turn the gas OFF for a moment, then repeat Steps 2 through 4.<\/p>\n<p>(Some experienced operators will blow on the flame to snuff it out, but it&#8217;s not recommended, and may be harmful to those bearing a moustache.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghls.org\/ghlsv1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20210219_150545.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" flame means steam is on the way!<\/p>\n<p>The burner will emit a distinct sound &#8212; listen for that as it is warming up.<\/p>\n<p>Close the access door.\u00a0 Listen that the burner doesn&#8217;t flame out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Summary<\/h3>\n<p>With a little practice, you&#8217;ll be able to light up the burner easily.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll take 10 to 12 minutes to make steam.\u00a0 Watch the pressure gauge.<br \/>\nAbove 40 psi, there should be enough to start the locomotive.<\/p>\n<p><a
