Boiler Testing Day - March 23![]() (L to R) Bob Intini, Harry Savile, Tom Stewart Pressure Testing Ted McJannett's 3-1/2" Pacific |
Chief Supt. Harry Savile was setup for boiler pressure testing at the museum first thing Saturday morning. A number of members were out to help including Bob Intini and Tom Stewart who assisted with the tests and acted as witnesses. Unfortunately, there was a disappointing turnout of members to have their locomotives tested. All boilers are required to be tested this year, whether they're used for giving rides to the public or not. This means that there are still a large number of engines to be tested before summer. |
| If you missed the test day, you will have to contact Chief Supt. Harry Savile and arrange with him to get you engine tested before running at the GHLS track this year. With less than a month till the first steaming day, you better arrange to get your boiler tested soon before Harry gets too busy with other track work. | |

The elevated and ground tracks around the east loop have been temporarily removed to allow for sewer construction by the city water works department. Tom Stewart and Harry Savile were out in February to remove and stack about 150ft of track sections to allow for the construction work, which was to begin in March. With less than a month till the first steaming day and no construction work started yet, we will be hard pressed to have the track ready by the first weekend in May. When the sewer work is completed, we will need all hands out to help with re-installing the track. |

Linc Johnson and Harry Savile have also been busy over the winter building rolling stock for the 7-1/4" track. With little snow to plow this winter Harry and Linc were able to complete three more public riding cars, a new caboose, stake side flat car and more. The new car barn will certainly be needed this year. There are now 6 riding cars that will be used as two or three car unit trains to give rides to the public on the ground track this year. |
| Work has also started on a special wheel chair car for the ground track, but one of the truck assemblies for this car is missing. If anyone knows where this truck is, please give Harry Savile a call. (905-632-5277) | |

The Montreal Live Steamers will be holding their 2002 Edition of the MLS International Meet on June 28th through July 1st for 3-1/2", 4-3/4", 5" and 7-1/4" gauges. You can register online at their website. The Richmond Hill Live Steamers are planning a Locomotive Driving Course. There would be a fee to cover costs. This would be a one day driving/steaming course that would include lunch. This is where novices can find out that age old question "When do I add some coal to the fire?" This is a great idea to help give the newer members some instruction and experience in correctly driving a locomotive. The R.H.L.S. will be celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, check their website for details on the special activities to be held this year. The Alberta Model Engineering Society has announced plans for a major expansion of the 7-1/2" ground track at their Iron Horse Park site north of Calgary. Similar to our own expansion plans, they will grow from 1700 ft in 2002 to 5000 ft in 2004 but they will have several bridges, over passes, tunnels and a snow shed. They also operate a 1000 ft elevated track with 2-1/2", 3-1/2", 4-3/4", 5" and 7-1/4" gauges! Email Ralph Steeves for more information. |

Steam Fan Trip
![]() Huntsville & Lake of Bays Portage Flyer No. 2 |
Bob McDowall has almost finalized all of the details for the club "Steam Fan Trip" this spring. The plan is to leave on Friday May 24th from Burlington via minivan at 6:00 AM. The first stop will be for breakfast in Huntsville and then on to the Muskoka Heritage Place just south of Huntsville to ride the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railroad steam train. They offer rides in open air coaches behind the 0-4-0T Portage Flyer No. 2 which runs between Village Sation and Fairy Lake.
We will then drive to Gravenhurst for a cruise of the Muskoka Lakes and a tour of the engine room aboard the steam ship HMS Segwun and then dinner in Gravenhurst. Return to Burlington is expected to be about 10:00 PM. Contact Bob for more details and to indicated if you plan to attend. |

Steve Moore has been able to find a buyer for his 3ft gauge 0-4-0 chassis by posting it on the web. It was purchased by the Beaver Brook Farm and Transportation Museum in Mount Vernon, New Hampshire. They plan to use it for a tourist ride at their museum site. A flat bed truck was used to transport the chassis from Burlington to New Hampshire. I can only imagine the conversation that took place when they crossed the border. It certainly does pay to advertise on the web. There are several live steam web sites where items can be posted for sale at little or no cost. Contact Russ Milland if you need any assistance with posting an item at any of these websites. |

The GHLS have lost two long time members in the recent months. Jim Gilbert passed away in December after a long battle with cancer and Ken Gent passed away in March. Arno Martens remembered Jim Gilbert: "He was an engineer and worked for the glass company for many years. He was a very quiet person, and when he did speak it used to be sound. Jim took early retirement about four to five years ago because of throat cancer. I do not think Jim ever smoked. We knew of each other for decades. The companies we worked for had dealings with each other albeit he and I never had any direct business contact. Jim will be missed by those of us who knew him." Cate Mee of TSME wrote: "Ken Gent died peacefully at the Hotel Diew Hospital in St Catharines, March 26, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday April 20 at St Mark's Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In lieu of flowers a donation to Shaw Festival Foundation, Rodman Hall Art Centre or the Pumphouse Foundation." Dave Best shared some of his memories of Ken Gent: "Ken Gent was a talented artist working mainly in oils and water colours. He had been commissioned to paint several 'British' locomotives. The painting I remember most was of the 'Evening Star' pulling out of a station with billowing white smoke and a full passenger consist. Eric Wootton built a 1" scale working model of this engine. Ken designed the current GHLS 'wheels' logo about 1984. Ken was very quiet in nature but would speak up when he had something of importance to contribute. Because of distance, Ken was not able to participate as much as he would have liked so we arranged to have meetings in members' homes and would make the trek to Niagara-on-the-Lake once a year so Ken could stay involved. Ken will be missed in GHLS as a Live Steamer, an artist, a gentleman, and a friend." The GHLS members wish to extend their condolences to both the Gilbert and Gent families for their loss. |
