| Farewell Party
A going away party for Dallas and Audrey was held at "Baranga's on the Beach" on Wednesday June 6th. There was a good turnout of GHLS members there to wish Dallas and Audrey all the best as they leave the museum and move on to new challenges in their lives. Audrey is retiring but will remain active with the club as she has been made an honorary GHLS member. Dallas is moving to northern Alberta to help with the family farm. The GHLS membership wishes them both all the best. Karen McCartney has been named as the replacement for Dallas. Welcome back Karen. |

Steaming Day - June 10, 2001
This steaming day we had a good turnout of club members and locomotives (working and display). Harry Savile and Ron McKinley had their 7-1/4" locomotives working great and they both ran all day. They were able to demonstrate the operation of a steam locomotive to many relatives and friends during the day. The only problem was finding relief drivers so that they could take a break once in a while. Ted McJannett had his 3-1/2" Pacific out for a tune-up run in preparation for the OMLET on June 24. It appeared to run well, so the competition better look out. Bob McDowall has his 3-1/2" Pacific repaired and running well after the drive rod problem he had during the last steaming day. Tom Stewart's 4-3/4" Pacific was running with it's usual efficiency, with several drivers taking turns at the throttle. Peter Masefield had Harry's 3-1/2" Pacific out but was unable to run when a problem with the valve gear was discovered. Linc Johnson's diesel was out for another trial run. The drive line problems have been fixed by changing from belts to chains, but a gremlin in the gearbox prevent him from finding neutral. |
| Rick Intini, Fred Eagle and Barry Graham had their current projects out for display to show the public what a locomotive looks like while it is being built. They spent most of the day explaining the construction and operation of a steam locomotive and explaining that the pieces on display are NOT for sale. The next steaming day we should have more members out with their projects for display. It helps when the public can see things as they are being built and it's a good show and tell for the club members. It was good to see the turnout of club members with and without locomotives, as the chores of setting up displays and loading up at the end of the day are easier with some extra helping hands. The next steaming day we need more experienced drivers as relief engineers so that we can keep the locomotives running for the public. On a hot sunny day the drivers will need several breaks during the day. | |
| Track Work
The new pedestrian Crossover Bridge being built by Steve Moore is well
under way. The major components have been fabricated and delivered to the
site. The next phase will be to prepare the foundations, erect the steel
assemblies and lay the decking. Members will be notified when the workdays
will be to get this done. The more helping hands the better. The bridge,
which will cross over both the low line and high line just to the south
of the station, is required to allow access to the station so that rides
can be given to the public on the high line.
